JAMB Deadline: 700,000 Candidates To Lose Admission on 26 jan

Edit Posted by with No comments
Prof Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated that over 1.6 candidates have been recommended for admission in the 2017/2018 admission year from various tertiary institutions .
Of that amount, only 500,000 have accepted their admission as at the time of filling this report.
The Board’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin who disclosed this during an interview with LEADERSHIP Friday yesterday stated that it was far beyond numbers recorded for other years.
Benjamin however stated that candidates were to accept their admission before the admission is said to be complete.

He attributed the increase to the flexibility of the cut-off marks and also the availability of data through the JAMB CAPS (Central Admission Processing System) which was introduced last year.
“We have over 500,000 accepted admission already. By the time the 1.1 candidates accept, we are now looking at 1.6 admission. So until the 1.1 candidates accept, by the time they accept, with the 500,000 that have accepted, we will have about 1.6 million accepted,” he said.
He explained that in CAPS, institution forwards recommended list to JAMB desk officer, the desk officer processes recommended list and generates list of provisional admissions, JAMB contacts candidates to accept or decline admission. If candidate accepts, admission is concluded for candidate.
The admission process ended yesterday, by 12 midnight but the process of acceptance still continues.

Maenwhile, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had expressed optimism that tertiary institutions in Nigeria will comply with its directive on the deadline of admission.
The Board’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin who spoke with LEADERSHIP stated that when the directive was given, many universities have completed the process of their admission while some were at 95 per cent of completion.
Benjamin added that the institutions had reached that stage of admission process even with the strike action by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) adding that the strike had not affected the process.
Recall that NON teaching staff unions in the universities under the umbrella of Joint Action Committee, JAC, last December directed all their branches nationwide to embark on a strike.

The three unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Non Academic Staff Union of Universities and Associated Institutions, NASU and National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT.
“Many universities have already finished their admission. Those who have not finished are already in their 95 per cent completion. This they did even with the strike. So nothing will stop them to finish the remaining five percent,” he said.
The head of media further stated that the deadline was given by the Board because it didn’t want the school calendar to be disrupted.
“Even after the strike action, the calendar will still be there,” he said.

Recall that JAMB has given  directed to all tertiary institutions to end their 2017 admission by January 25, 2018.

My rift with Davido was bigger than fighting Abacha- Dele Momodu

Dele Momodu and Davido during their reconciliation in Decemeber

Ovation Magazine Publisher, Dele Momodu, has said that the two-year rift between himself and popular singer, Davido, was the biggest challenge of his life.

Mr. Momodu, a former presidential aspirant, disclosed this when he was a guest on an ongoing reality TV show ‘Celebrity Housemate’, in Lagos on Thursday.

Mr. Momodu told the contestants that Davido’s popularity made the rift “bigger than fighting Abacha”.

He said, “The Davido issue was my biggest battle ever. It was bigger than fighting Abacha because of the blistering popularity of David; he is an extremely popular guy and it was very unfortunate, because a baby was involved; very beautiful girl, Imade. When it happened, I tried to avoid a collision with the family because I am very close to the family especially because of Ademola who is now a senator.”

Both parties reconciled after two years of bickering over ‘Baby Mama drama at the 10th edition of the annual Ovation Red Carol in Lagos in December.

Speaking further, the ace publisher said Davido’s father, Tunji Adeleke, facilitated the “true reconciliation”.

He said, “We used to sleep in the same house when I was in exile in London. Whenever Ademola was around, he would call me and then pick me up to his house and I’ll sleep there and when I need to go back to my own house he would drop me.

“So when the baby issue came, I didn’t know about it, if Sophie (Davido’s first Babymama) didn’t tell me she was pregnant, I wouldn’t have known, she was able to hide it perfectly from everyone.”

Davido apologised to Mr. Momodu after performing on stage, which led to a hug by the media mogul and host of the event in December 2017.

See the clip from the interview below:

At the peak of their rift in December 2016, Mr. Momodu walked out of a concert where Davido performed after the latter called him his ‘boy’.
Performing on stage, Davido sang thus ‘Mr Dele na boy, Dele na my boy’…
Mr. Momodu who appeared insulted walked out of the venue to salvage the situation.

Admission Officers Beg JAMB To Extend 2017 Admission Deadline

Edit Posted by with No comments

The admission officers of the University of Jos and Bauchi State University, Haroma Emmanuel and Babani Sani have appealed to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB to extend the deadline for 2017 Admissions.

This is coming after the Board announced January 25th as the deadline for all 2017 Admissions.

However, According to JAMB Registrar Prof Is-haq Oloyede, the admission deadline still stands.

Meanwhile, the ongoing strike action by the non-academic staff of universities has been identified as the reason over 600,000 candidates are yet to gain admission.

In this regard, Prof Oloyede, has called on NASU to strike a deal with the FG in order to call -off the strike action as soon as possible because it might lead to the postponment of the 2018 UTME as some of the centres to be used for the exam are located within the university campuses.

Edo CP, Kokumo; state Governor, Godwin Obaseki

A gang of suspected armed robbers have shot dead a senior lecturer at the University of Benin, Dr Godwin Omofonwa, in Ugbowo, in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was gathered that the robbers had invaded the residence of the university don in Evbuomore quarters in the early hours of Wednesday.

They were said to have shot Omonfonwa and dispossessed him and others of their belongings.

However, one of the armed robbers was said to have been killed during a gun duel with policemen, while five others fled.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Michael Osasuyi, said the deceased was the examination officer of the Faculty of Education.

He said, “It is a very big blow to the university; the vice-chancellor is saddened and commiserates with members of the family. We pray and hope that everybody puts hands together to support the government and the police.

The police cannot perform magic; they work with information. Anybody who has useful information should give it to the law enforcement agencies so that they can comb the area and restore peace to the state.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, told journalists at a press briefing in Benin that the command received a distress call around 1.14am on Wednesday, adding that some policemen were immediately deployed in the scene.

“In the ensuing gun battle, one of the marauders was shot dead, while others escaped. Sadly, Dr Godwin Omofonwa, a lecturer in the Department of Education, University of Benin, died from gunshot wounds he received from the robbers.

“This particular incident is an isolated case as crime has been on a downward trend since my assumption of office as the Commissioner of Police, Edo State. The police have been on the trail of this particular group of hoodlums, who have been troubling the vicinity, until one of them met his Waterloo, he added.

Kokumo noted that three mobile phones belonging to the deceased lecturer and a Nokia phone stolen from one Precious, were recovered from the killed robber.

The police commissioner said other items recovered from the scene of the incident were a single-barrelled gun, an iron cutter, one live and 12 expended cartridges and a torch.

In a related development, Kokumo said one person had been arrested for the alleged murder of a priest in the Ovia North-East LGA of the state.

He noted that the suspect, one Johnson Igonoyoye, had confessed to the crime.

He added that two other persons were arrested for allegedly dispossessing a woman of her Lexus 330 Sports Utility Vehicle and jewellery.

Wizkid’s music appeals to me more than Davido’s – Felix Duke

Edit Posted by with No comments

After dominating the Nigerian music scene for decades, veteran reggae-dancehall musician, Felix Duke, is still much around and is not prepared to throw in the towel anytime soon.
The ‘Mr Goody Goody’ crooner who ruled the music space while traversing the globe with his music during his hey days bragged to Showtime in an exclusive chat that though the music industry has metamorphosed from what it used to be, he is still hotter than most of the new school generation of artistes.

I’m hotter than fire anytime; I have a new single I’m promoting at the moment and there is another one cooking, I featured Timaya on it”, he boasted.
He explained why the fire and stardom of some old school artistes have fizzled out.
You know everything in life has got it’s time and season, some of the old school artistes have nothing to offer anymore. Some of them still follow the trend of time but one thing or the other limits them from shining like the new school artistes. You know times have changed, maybe they don’t have money to promote their songs.

Speaking further, he agreed that old school musicians make good music which lasts longer than that of new school artistes.
“You are very correct, because Nigerians are now dancing to only beats, they don’t care about good lyrics anymore.”
He finally crowned Wizkid a better musician than Davido because his music appeals to him more than Davido’s.

Anybody can be named or crowned anything these days because it is their season. I personally like Wizkid, he is very talented and he’s been making good use of his time and I like that. As a father, the two of them (Wizkid and Davido) are good, but Wizkid’s songs move me more.

EFCC talks on attempt to arrest Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari

Edit Posted by with No comments

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has denied making attempt to arrest President Muhammdu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari.
Reports emerged last week that some security agents stormed the home of the President’s Chief of Staff to get him arrested.

However, the EFCC said yesterday that it was not investigating Kyari, adding that it did not deploy its operatives in his Defence House quarters.
In a statement last night by its Acting Head of Media and Publicity, Samie Amaddin, the leading anti-graft agency said it did not make any attempt to arrest the COS.
It said, “Ordinarily, we would have ignored the report and allow it to end up in the dustbin of history, for that is where it actually belongs, but for the fact that it is a follow–up to an earlier similar report also titled: EFCC’s attempt to arrest Abba Kyari sparks panic in Aso Rock, which we considered an attempt to silence the commission from carrying on with its constitutional duties of fighting corruption; we have considered it necessary to clarify issues in relation thereof.
“For the purpose of clarification, the modus operandi of the EFCC does not accommodate the alleged invasion as the modus operandi of the commission has always been to scrutinise petitions upon receipt, look at the petition on the face value, if it has merit and to carry out preliminary investigation to establish a prima facie case.
“Once all these requirements are satisfied, the suspect(s) is (are) invited for questioning and interrogation and his (their) statement(s) taken under caution.
“All these are prelude to arraignment in a competent court of jurisdiction and a suspect who is being invited for interrogation is formally sent an invitation letter to that effect.
“The so-called invasion is entirely alien to the established mode of operations of the EFCC, established over the last one-and-a-half decades in line with international best practices.
“Firstly, the commission will like to state that it is not investigating Mr. Kyari nor is it aware of any petition against him.
“Secondly, EFCC does not ‘invade’ the homes or offices of anyone the commission wishes to interact with in furtherance of the discharge of its mandate.
“The commission will properly notify and invite any person it wants to assist it in the resolution of any matter under examination.
“Thirdly, EFCC does not go to carry out invitations or arrests in the middle of the night. As a transparent organisation the commission carries out all its operations in broad daylight.
“These and other standard operational procedures are what guide the activities of the commission and which have earned it worldwide acclaim over the years.
“The commission was therefore taken aback when an online medium went public with the story of a purported “impending arrest”. EFCC does not do speculative investigations or arrests.
“Therefore, the action of those behind the false reports could best be described as shouting wolf where none exists.
“It must be underscored that EFCC makes it a point of duty and professional responsibility to act within the ambit of the law. The commission cannot be intimated and crying wolf by anyone cannot stop the commission from carrying out its constitutional responsibility.”

The Hammers have been offered a swap deal, which would see Michy Batshuayi go the other way.
